Managing MS Symptoms

Gait (difficulty in walking)
(see also Balance and Dizziness and Incoordination)
Gait (difficulty in walking) disturbance in MS is not unusual and several factors may contribute to it. Muscle weakness, increased tone and spasticity, balance problems, co-ordination problems and even fatigue and pain can all play a role in causing a disturbance in gait. Gait is governed by many neural pathways and the disseminated nature of MS makes it possible for many important nerve tracts to be disrupted. Left untreated, gait disturbance can result in added stress to limbs, joints, and the lower back, leading to pain and greater dysfunction. Physical and occupational therapy can be most helpful in assessing gait and recommending strategies, aids, and home modifications to promote better gait and safety in activities of daily living that are compromised by gait disturbance.

Physiotherapist, occupational therapist, family physician.
Symptom Management:
It is important to assess gait in consideration of confounding factors such as fatigue, weakness, and visual impairment. Treating gait problems early can also help to minimize later problems related to poor alignment and strain.
