About Us

Providing help and hope

Yves Savoie, President and Chief Executive of the MS Society of Canada and President, Ontario Division

Yves Savoie

Spring is a time of reinvigoration and renewal. It is a time when we come together to take collective steps to end MS and to recognize MS Awareness Month.

Since the 1970's the MS Society has observed MS Awareness Month in May.  This year is a particularly important year to highlight the work that the MS Society does to provide hope and help to Canadians affected by MS. There is great hope around potential new pathways for MS research and discovery, including a potential link between multiple sclerosis and chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI).

These new discoveries and the hope that they have inspired have been incredibly exciting, and they remind me every day of the critical role the MS Society plays in funding the best science, which is the surest way of accelerating the discovery of new MS therapies. The MS Society plays an equally critical role in providing timely, relevant and accurate information to help people make their own decisions about living with MS.

We are seeing increased demand for research dollars and our research programs continue to grow. I am thrilled that we are investing millions to attract the next generation of MS research through the endMS Research and Training Network and to accelerate the pace of discovery. And, we continue to work diligently to ensure that every person with MS can live a life of quality as full participants in their community.

The funds raised by over 60,000 participants in 160 MS Walks across Canada help us to provide help and hope to the tens of thousands of Canadians affected by MS: help through the client services we deliver to people in communities who live with MS and their loved ones, such as information and referral, support groups, and financial assistance for equipment; and hope through our commitment to find new treatments and, ultimately, a cure.

This spring, I encourage you to join the movement to end MS by participating in fundraising events in your communities, by supporting MS research, and by recognizing MS Awareness Month in May. Each step we take can have a profound impact on the lives of Canadians affected by multiple sclerosis. Together, we can end MS.

Sincerely,

Yves Savoie
